(국영문 동시 배포) 「연대측정학에서 본 고대 경주의 시간」 학술대회 개최

문화재청 국립경주문화재연구소(소장 이종훈)는 영남고고학회(회장 김두철)와 함께 오는 12일 오전 10시 30분「연대측정학에서 본 고대 경주의 시간」이란 주제로 학술대회를 경주힐튼호텔에서 진행하며, 동시에 온라인으로도 중계한다.
유적과 유물에 대한 절대적인 연대를 확인하고자 발굴조사 현장에서의 연대측정연구는 다양하게 발전하고 적용되어왔지만, 연대측정학을 중심으로 한 논의는 잘 이루어지지 않았다. 이번 학술대회는 기존의 연구성과를 통해 경주의 역사 시간을 찾아가는 논의이다. 그 중에서도 최근 활발하게 이루어지고 있는 월성유적을 중심으로 한 연대측정연구 성과 등이 공개된다. 더불어, 연대측정의 성과 자료 구축과 활용 방법을 논의해 앞으로의 연대측정연구에 대한 방향까지 가늠해볼 수 있는 자리가 될 것이다.
학술대회는 1개의 기조강연과 6개의 주제 발표로 구성됐다. 기조강연인 ▲ ‘연대측정 연구의 공과(功過)와 전망’(김장석, 서울대학교)에서는 고고학적 출토 유물 등의 ‘상대적 시간’과 시료의 자연과학적분석을 통한 ‘절대적 시간’을 찾는 방법에 대한 다양한 사례를 제시한다. 이를 통해 두 방법에 대한 상호보완성을 높일 수 있는 전망도 제시된다.
그리고 주제발표는 신라의 상대적 시간을 정리한 ▲ ‘고고학 편년으로 본 신라의 연대’(남익희, 세종문화재연구원) 발표를 시작으로, ▲ ‘목재의 연대분석을 통한 경주지역 연대기 복원’(김요정, 충북대학교)에서는 연륜연대측정법을 사용하여 경주지역에서 출토된 신라 시대의 나무를 통해 처음으로 작성된 ‘마스터연대기’를 소개한다.
* 연륜연대측정법: 나무의 연륜(나이테) 패턴을 관찰하여 연륜 하나하나에 절대연대를 부여하는 방법
▲ ‘경주 월성에서의 연대측정연구와 방향’(최문정, 국립경주문화재연구소)과 ▲ ‘방사성탄소연대를 이용한 월성해자의 역연대’(이창희, 부산대학교)에서는 경주의 중심유적인 월성을 중심으로 축적된 연대측정결과를 소개하고 향후 연구 방향을 제시한다. 마지막으로 ▲ ‘방사성탄소연대 DB(데이터베이스)구축과 활용방안’(황재훈, 충남대학교)에서는 문화재 정보로서의 연대측정결과를 관리하고, 국가의 공공자원으로서 공유할 방안을 함께 고민할 수 있는 화두를 제시한다.

발표 후에는 기조강연을 맡은 서울대학교 김장석 교수를 좌장으로 종합대담이 마련되어 유기적인 토의와 검토를 진행할 예정이다. 대담은 기존의 토론처럼 1:1 문답 방식이 아닌 5인의 토론자와 발표자가 연대측정학 연구를 다양한 관점에서 풀어내는 방식으로 진행된다.

문화재청 국립경주문화재연구소와 영남고고학회는 이번 학술대회가 고고학적 발굴조사성과와 연대측정연구에 대한 다양한 논의를 모을 수 있는 첫걸음이 되길 기대한다. 나아가, 경주지역에서 이루어지는 다양한 노력이 신라왕경 연구의 학제간 연대를 강화할 수 있도록 지속적인 조사·연구 성과를 공유해갈 계획이다.

The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (Lee Jong-Hoon, Director) will co-host an academic conference titled 『Time of Ancient Gyeongju through Chronology』 with the Yeongnam Archaeological Society (Kim Ducheol, Director) at the Hilton Gyeongju Hotel and, at the same time, is YouTube Livestreaming on March 12 at 10.30 a.m.
The study of dating in the excavation field has been developed and applied variously to identify the absolute dates of historical sites and artifacts. However, a discussion focused on chronology has not gone well. This conference is a debate to find the time of the history of Gyeongju through existing research results. Among them, it will be disclosed the results of dating studies focused on the Wolseong site, which has been actively conducted in recent years. Moreover, it will be an opportunity to estimate the direction of dating researches in the future by discussing how to build and use the results of dating and their data.
The conference consists of one keynote lecture and 6 topics of presentations. The keynote lecture ‘merits and demerits (功過) of chronological research and its future perspective’ (Kim Jangseok, Seoul Nation University) present various cases about methods to find the ‘relative time’ of archaeological excavated artifacts and the ‘absolute time’ from natural scientific analysis. Through this, it will suggest a prospect to enhance the complementarities of these two methods.
6 topics of presentations will begin with the presentation ‘chronicle of Silla through archaeological chronology’ (Nam Ikhui, Sejong Research Institute of Cultural Heritage). Then, it will be followed by the presentation ‘the restoration of chronology in Gyeongju area through dendrochronological analysis.’ This presentation introduces ‘the Master Chronology,’ which was first written through trees from the Silla era excavated from Gyeongju using the dendrochronology.
* Dendrochronology is a method for measuring the absolute dating by studying tree ring patterns; each ring marks one year.
The next presentations are ‘the study of chronology and its direction in Wolseong, Gyeongju’ (Choi Moon-Jung, The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage) and ‘the absolute date of Wolseong moats using radiocarbon dating’ (Lee Changhui, Busan National University). These two presentations show the dating results based on Wolseong, the most important historical site in Gyeongju and propose future research direction. In the last presentation, ‘building database of the radiocarbon dating and utilization method’ (Hwang Jaehoon, Chungnam University) suggests how to manage the results of dating as cultural information and share them as public resources.
After presentations, the general discussion will be held with Professor Kim Jangseok (Seoul National University), who was in charge of the keynote lecture, as a moderator. Discussion and review will be conducted in a way that five debaters and presenters discuss the chronological researches from various perspectives, rather than a one-to-one question-and-answer manner.
In order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, only selected people, who applied in advance by telephone and email, can attend this conference. However, this conference will be aired in real-time on the YouTube channel of the Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage for the public.
