The Cultural Heritage Administration (Administrator Kim Hyun-Mo) has developed an integrated BI (Brand Identity)*, as one of the government innovations and proactive governance, which makes it possible to easily recognize overseas Korean cultural heritages (hereinafter referred to as "overseas cultural heritages"). * Refers to a trademark or a logo that shows the image of policies or corporate products.
The integrated BI for overseas cultural heritages was developed to strengthen overseas cultural heritages' protection and utilization. It will be used in various promotional material such as booklets, field trip maps, promotional banners, invitations, etc., and signs attached to diplomatic offices, historic sites of the independence movement, and immigration history-related buildings with the characteristics of overseas non-moveable cultural heritages.
In 2020, after conducting case studies of the UK, Canada, Poland, etc., the BI development process was as follows: English trademark name development (August); Basic BI development (September to October); Applicational BI development (November to December).
The basic BI was inspired by the trigrams (geon, gon, gam, ri) used in Taegeukgi. By connecting the trigrams' ends like a Mobius strip, the image shows the overseas cultural heritage as a symbol of historical and cultural exchange that connects the past and the future between Korea and its location. Several options were contested as the English trademark name and 'Heritage of Korea' was chosen after experts and English natives' advice. It is to emphasize that Korea's historicity has been handed down to the present.
With the development of this integrated BI, CHA plans to cooperate with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (overseas promotion), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (diplomatic offices and immigration history), the National Veterans Affairs Office (independence movement-related historic sites), the Ministry of Education (historic sites), etc. to unify the image of overseas cultural heritage projects which were promoted individually by each governmental department. In addition, CHA plans to distribute preservation and management manuals, support for repair and restoration, and support PR and utilization in stages so that overseas cultural heritages can be preserved and managed voluntarily in location by improving foreign collectors' awareness.
