문화재청(청장 최응천)은 지난 7월 20일자로 ‘양주 회암사지 유적(Archaeological Remains at the Hoeamsa Temple Site in Yangju City)이 유네스코 세계유산 잠정목록(Tentative List)에 등재되었으며, 세계유산센터 공식 홈페이지(https://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/6617/)에 7월 26일 최종 게재되었다고 밝혔다. 이로써 우리나라는 이달 기준 총 13건의 세계유산 잠정목록을 보유하게 되었다.
세계유산 잠정목록은 세계유산으로서 가치가 있는 유산에 대한 충분한 연구와 자료 축적을 통해 향후 세계유산으로 등재하기 위해 준비하는 제도이다. 세계유산 등재를 위해서는 반드시 잠정목록에 등재되어야 하며, 잠정목록에 등재된 후 최소 1년이 지나야만 세계유산 등재 신청 자격이 주어진다.

경기도 양주시에 위치한 ‘양주 회암사지 유적’은 70여동의 건물지가 확인된 중심사역과, 부도·석등·비석 등 고승들의 기념물로 구성되어 있다.
이번에 유네스코에 제출한 잠정목록 신청서에서는 이 유적이 ▲ 14세기 동아시아에 만개했던 불교 선종 문화의 번영과 확산을 증명하는 탁월한 물적 증거이자, ▲ 불교 선종의 수행 전통과 사원의 공간구성 체계를 구체적으로 증명하고 있는 점을 ‘탁월한 보편적 가치(Outstanding Universal Value)’로 제시하였다.
문화재청은 앞으로 경기도, 양주시와 함께 적극적으로 협력하여 「양주 회암사지 유적」의 유네스코 세계유산 등재를 위해 노력해 나갈 예정이다.

The Archaeological Remains at the Hoeamsa Temple Site in Yangju City was officially registered on the Tentative List of the Republic of Korea by the World Heritage Centre on July 20th. With this, South Korea has 13 properties on its Tentative List as of July 2022. UNESCO Tentative List was established to assist the States Parties in preparing UNESCO World Heritage nominations by facilitating further research and information gathering. It is stipulated in the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention that “a nomination dossier will not be considered complete unless the nominated property has already been included on the State Party’s Tentative List” at least one year prior to the submission of any nomination. The Archaeological Remains at the Hoeamsa Temple Site in Yangju City is located in Yangju City in Gyeonggi-do Province. It consists of stupas, stone lanterns, steles and other monuments commemorating venerable monks as well as about 70 buildings sites which compose the main part of the temple. It was considered to be of Outstanding Universal Value as it offers exceptional testimony to the flourishing of the Seon School of Buddhism across East Asia in the 14th century and provides material evidence of the spatial composition of a Seon monastery and religious and monastic practices of the Seon Buddhism. The Cultural Heritage Administration will continue to develop its cooperation with Gyeonggi-do Province and Yangju City in order to successfully inscribe the Archaeological Remains at the Hoeamsa Temple Site in Yangju City on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
