(국영문 동시 게제) 천연기념물 ‘장수하늘소’ 첫 애벌레 부화 성공
- 국립문화재연구소, 지난해 발견한 장수하늘소 애벌레 인공증식시켜 짝짓기 -

문화재청 국립문화재연구소(소장 지병목)가 지난해 8월 강원도 춘천에서 46년 만에 발견된 장수하늘소 애벌레를 인공증식시켜 첫 애벌레 부화에 성공했다. 멸종위기에 처한 장수하늘소는 천연기념물 제218호이다.

이번에 부화에 성공한 장수하늘소는 지난해 춘천에서 발견되어 국립문화재연구소가 보존 조치한 다섯 마리 애벌레 중 먼저 성장한 암컷을 국립수목원이 2017년 광릉숲에서 발견한 장수하늘소로부터 얻은 수컷과 짝짓기해 지난 3일 크기 1cm 미만의 첫 애벌레를 부화시키는 데 성공했다.

지난해 장수하늘소가 발견된 춘천지역은 1962년도에 천연기념물 제75호 「춘천의 장수하늘소 발생지」로 지정되었다가, 소양강 다목적댐 건설로 인해 서식지가 수몰되면서 보존가치가 없어져 1973년도에 지정해제된 곳의 인접지다. 이번 부화는 지정해제 후 46년 만에 다시 발견된 장수하늘소를 통해 첫 자식세대를 확보한 점, 광릉숲 이외의 지역에서 살던 장수하늘소의 번식이라서 광릉숲에만 서식하는 것으로 알려진 장수하늘소의 유전적 다양성을 높일 수 있는 계기를 마련한 점에서 의미가 크다.

장수하늘소(학명: Callipogon relictus)는 딱정벌레목, 하늘소과에 속하며 딱정벌레 중 크기가 가장 큰 곤충으로 한국, 중국, 러시아, 일본 등지에서 매우 제한적으로 분포하며, 현재 국내에서는 경기도 포천시 광릉숲이 유일한 서식지로 알려져 있다.
문화재청 국립문화재연구소는 이번 부화 성공으로 정부혁신 계획에 따른 지속적인 연구기반을 마련하고, 인공사육과 증식을 통해 서식지도 추가로 복원해 나갈 계획이다. 또한, 장소하늘소를 활용한 전시와 교육프로그램을 운영하고, 안정적인 증식과 보존관리가 가능한 증식보존 시설도 확충해나갈 계획이다.

NRICH succeeds in hatching the NaturalMonumentCallipogon relictus that discoveredafter 46 years
National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, Cultural Heritage Administration, hereinafter “NRICH”(President Ji Byongmok) reported that the larva of the natural monument No. 218Callipogon relictus, which was discovered in 46 years in Chuncheon, has grown into an Imago and succeeded in hatching the first filial generation through the breeding process.
The larva of the parentCallipogon relictus that successfully hatched were the larva from the five parentgeneration found in Chuncheon last year and were preserved by the NRICH. One of these females became the first adult, and the lab, in cooperation with Korea National Arboretum, succeeded in mating her with the males that were the offspring of Callipogon relictus found in Gwangneung Forest in 2017, and finally succeeded in hatching the first filial generation offspring less than one centimeter in size on last 3rd.
With the successful hatching, NRICH will be able to secure a foundation for which they can continue their research to preserve Callipogon relictus and through artificial breeding and propagation, they plan to restore their habitat. In addition, it will operate exhibitions and educational programs using breeding subjects in addition to the research to enhance the public’s understanding of the cultural value of the natural monument Callipogon relictus. In order for this to happen, additional propagation facility for the natural monument Callipogon relictus is necessary for stable growth and preservation management.

The location where parent generation Callipogon relictus was found is an adjacent site to the place that was designated as natural monument no.75 「Chuncheon Callipogon relictus Origin Site」in 1962, then had its status revoked in 1973 due to the loss of its conservation value as the habitat collapsed due to the construction of the Soyang River Multipurpose Dam.
The successful hatching is very meaningful in that the first filial generation was obtained directly through Callipogon relictus discovered 46 years after the designation revocation, that Callipogon relictus appeared in a place other than the Gwangneung Forest known as its only habitat and that this provides an opportunity to increase the genetic diversity of Callipogon relictus living in the limited Gwangneung Forest. |
